STS Helps Military Veterans Find Work By PJ Anson — CEO, STS Aviation Group
With Memorial Day and July 4th grouped so close together, it seems aptly appropriate for me to focus this article on the brave men and women who have served – and continue to serve – in our nation’s armed forces.
Over the years, STS Aviation Group has supported numerous military operations both state side and abroad. Our team has had the pleasure to work closely with military personnel on countless government projects, and we’ve even been able to hire some of them to long-term and permanent positions within the aviation industry after their service careers have ended.
STS’s working experience with military members across every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces has led us to target specific out-processing stations in our recruitment efforts. In some cases, we’ve even established a continual on-ground presence at those centers in an effort to help those ending their active service careers find gainful employment shortly after being discharged.
Through our commitment to recruiting current and exiting military personnel, we’ve been able to unearth a wealth of talented and disciplined employees who continually perform at the highest level.
STS Aviation Group encounters dozens of qualified military veterans every day looking for careers, and many of the civilian companies we compete with are not prepared to take advantage of their unique skill sets and experience.
Some of the prerequisites for candidate qualifications at our competitors’ companies are not designed for those with military backgrounds. At STS, however, we do things differently. Rather than shuffle veteran resumes to the back of the hiring pile, we seek out and actively recruit qualified military personnel on a daily basis to fill hundreds of available position throughout the country. So while our competition fails to utilize uniquely qualified veterans to subsidize their workforce, we embrace and welcome veteran skill sets and help them find long-term, prosperous careers.

We devote a considerable amount of time and resources in an effort to ensure that those exiting the military have viable careers waiting for them; and these efforts will not cease. STS Engineering Solutions Provides PMA Support By Randy Steenholdt — Sr. Vice President, STS Engineering Solutions
Most MRO’s and aircraft operators are familiar with use and responsibilities of an FAA DER (Designated Engineering Representative) for developing and approving major repairs and/or alterations, as well as the support of STC’s. Additionally, the STS Engineering Solutions (STSES) DER team provides DER services for fleet approval repair specifications (RS-DER) and PMA (Parts Manufacturing Authority). Based on the concept of the OEM SRM’s (Structural Repair Manuals), operators often experience same/similar damage to structural aircraft members. In lieu of obtaining an aircraft-specific DER approved repair, operators are becoming more savvy and proactive in obtaining fleet approval. The RS-DER designation has been authorized to a very limited number of Structural DER’s for this specific purpose. Like the SRM repairs, the RS-DER approved project can be utilized for the operator’s fleet on an unlimited basis. Part manufacturing can be broken in to two distinct disciplines: 1.) Parts used for aircraft and component repair and 2.) Parts fabricated for resale. Operators and MRO’s are currently allowed to fabricate and install repair parts in accordance with AC43-18 guidelines. For primary structural parts, DER approval is required for part number specific repair parts. Once approved by the DER, the operator or MRO has the authority to fabricate and utilize the repair parts on an unlimited basis. If parts are fabricated purely for the purpose of resale, the FAA requires PMA approval. Whereas a DER can provide recommended approval, the FAA must issue ultimate acceptance/approval. This is based on the additional requirements which the FAA imposes in regard to part inspection procedures, applicable repair manuals, and inspection/acceptance of the 145 repair station fabricating the parts. STSES possesses several DER’s with PMA experience in various engineering disciplines. As a 24/7 engineering support organization, STSES embraces the need for expedient and cost-effective engineering services. And with 21 DER’s on staff, we stand ready to support any aircraft initiative.
As we close out the second quarter of 2014 with another strong month, I find myself looking back at what we have accomplished and question… “What’s next? Where do we go from here?”
We consider ourselves very fortunate to have developed such great working relationships with our customers and OEM business partners. Without these relationships, our company would never have been able to accomplish what it has, nor would it be able to look toward the future with such promise and excitement.
STS Component Solutions is thriving. We have experienced significant growth in two of our newer business segments; Aircraft & Engine Asset Purchases as well as OEM Distribution. Both units represent two of the company’s fastest growing segments, and I am certain that they will continue to thrive. We are very confident that there is a significant a growth opportunity in each of these markets and that STS has a good pipeline that will fuel our continued growth and expansion.
In an effort to sustain and build upon the recent success we’ve experienced, STS Component Solutions will soon be implementing several new initiatives for the balance of 2014. Within the engine asset segment of our business, we will aggressively continue to seek out new engines to purchase and disassemble in an effort to complement our existing product offerings. We also plan to further expand and diversify our engine asset program into power generation. This is an industry that we have previously supported, and we will continue to leverage the same unique business model that has been so successful for us in our commercial business. The increased product focus on marine and industrial power plant engines will enable STS to further diversify business/service markets that are looking for integrated, turn-key supply solutions. We are very excited about the new opportunities that we have identified and look forward to establishing STS as a leading supplier within the power generation market.
As for OEM Distribution, STS Component Solutions will continue to leverage our global customer base and business partnerships in an effort to develop new OEM spares and MRO solution-based programs. With the establishment of additional offices in Brazil, Europe and Asia Pacific, we now have strategically based inventories to support new and existing customers in each of these markets. We have some exciting new opportunities and programs that will be implemented later this year that will further utilize these strategic locations to provide unparalleled global support for our strategic business partners.
In 2014, STS Component Solutions has closed some very significant OEM support programs in Asia, Europe, South America and back home here in the states. All of these programs have represented incremental new business opportunities for both our OEM partners and of course STS, and we look forward to continuing these successes by strategically creating new OEM partnerships with products that will further complement our service offerings and portfolio.
Our team is prepared for the coming challenges that we will face in the balance of 2014. But when it is all said and done, I am confident that we will record another year to remember for STS Component Solutions.
As I look back at our past successes and see what we have already accomplished, I reflect on a famous quote from one of my favorite U.S. Presidents that has always inspired me…

In the hot seat… Keith Mwanalushi of AviTrader speaks with Tom Covella, Group President at STS Component Solutions
AviTrader MRO: What attracted you to this business?
Covella: For me, I wanted to do something different. Something that you can deliver value and make a difference. The aviation aftermarket business is a very dynamic and fast paced business. Every day represents new opportunities and challenges. But the most fascinating part of the business is the relationships that can be established in all of the global markets. I have been very fortunate to be able to forge great relationships in many global markets and that coupled with the items mentioned above is what makes this business what it is.
AviTrader MRO: What does a typical day’s work entail in your job?
Covella: There is rarely a typical day in our business. This is what makes aviation the exciting business it is. However, the goal is to take the opportunity to check in with the various international offices we have, review the current opportunities and strategies and how we are progressing and interacting internally with our team and our strategic business partners.
AviTrader MRO: What is the most challenging part of your job?
Covella: It’s finding the time to interact with everyone. For me the people in aviation and especially within STS is what makes us who we are and the business that we are in. Sometimes finding the time to meet and speak with all of your team members and business partners since we have offices in different parts of the world, managing the different time zones is sometimes a challenge.
AviTrader MRO: What is the best way for operators to minimize costly AOG situations?
Covella: Airlines and MRO’s are constantly finding ways to effectively manage their inventories as a means to avoid costly AOG situations. The best ways to accomplish this is to establish a technology based planning and forecasting tool in addition to aligning yourself with best strategic partners. By implementing these strategies operators can maximise their inventory utilisation and minimise these costly AOG situations.
AviTrader MRO: STS Components Solutions opened a regional office in Singapore late last year. How important is the Asia Pacific region for future growth?
Covella: The Asia Pacific region represents the largest growth market for MRO and aftermarket services. We are committed to supporting this market and are a firm believer that you need to have a physical presence in these markets to effectively support the operators and MRO’s. For STS this region represents the largest opportunity for growth within our business.
AviTrader MRO: There are some industry concerns about the high cost of spare components for new generation aircraft, what are your thoughts?
Covella: Although I have stated that the aviation market is very different than other businesses at the end of the day the old economic proverb “supply verses demand” has its effect in every market. Thus, the perceived high cost of spare components for new generation will eventually be challenged by “supply verses demand”. Now with this being said, we need to look at the new technologies that are being introduced on the newer generation aircraft and what impact these technologies have on the “lifecycle costs” of the components before a true determination is made. I think this has to be looked at on a “caseby-case” basis and over an extended period of time before a firm stance can be established.
AviTrader MRO: How can airlines and/or MROs best manage their spares inventory at a minimum cost?
Covella: Airlines and MRO’s are constantly being challenged to provide optimal inventory utilisation a cost effective price. This is always difficult to balance but in my mind if you have the right technologies and the best strategic business partners this can be accomplished. What needs to be clearly defined in your business strategy is what your core competency is and how you want to maximize this. From there, you can compliment this with synergistic business partners to maximize the efficiency and utilization of your spares.
AviTrader MRO: What’s next in the pipeline at STS?
Covella: That is a good question but obviously a sensitive one as well. STS prides itself on its ability to provide “Solutions to Keep you Flying”. Thus, we are always looking at new ways to provide value based solutions that can effectively utilize our capabilities and services. We are committed to being a global provider of services with a physical presence in each of the geographic markets. If you look at the past year we have establishes a physical presence in South America (Brazil); Asia (Singapore) and Eastern Europe (Estonia). In our mind we will continue to look at new markets and regions that we can further expand our business.In addition to this we have built the footprint to becoming a service provider on some of the newer generation aircraft such as the B787. It is our goal to be on the leading edge of these new aircraft platforms and we are committed to becoming a market leader on these aircraft. For STS, 2014 and beyond represent some exciting new opportunities and strategic developments. Stay tuned and you will see these roll out in the next couple of months as we continue to build our legacy. We are excited about the opportunities in front of us and we look forward to our continued growth and success.

STS Aviation Group Welcomes 16 New Employees
In this post, we would like to spotlight one of STS Aviation Group’s recruiting all stars, Tony Mendoza, and introduce 16 new employees whom have all been hired in the past few months.
As STS Aviation continues to grow, we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide the aerospace industry with “Solutions to Keep You Flying.”
Tony Mendoza – Account Manager/Technical Engineer Recruiter at STS Engineering Solutions
What does your job entail?
I am responsible for recruiting aerospace engineers, dealing with customer service requests, sales, account management, research, interacting with decision makers and training fellow team members.
What do you like best about working for STS?
What I like best about working for STS is the learning process. Given my position as Account Manager/Technical Engineer Recruiter, I’m afforded the opportunity to learn from so many wonderful people who possess a wide-array of skill sets and expertise.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love spending time with my wife and son, fishing, going to the beach and enjoying the outdoors whenever possible.
What is your favorite TV show?
I would have to say River Monsters or The Ultimate Fighter. Both are fantastic, in my opinion.
What is your most memorable moment as an STS employee?
The very first time I placed an aerospace engineer into a full-time position is something I’ll never forget. As a recruiter, I have the opportunity to change people’s lives, and the first time I was able to do that meant the world to me.
Matt was born and raised in West Palm Beach, making him one of STS’ only true Floridians. Matt graduated from FSU in 2006 with a double major in Political Science and Economics. He recently finished his MBA at Lynn University and has plenty of hobbies outside of work.
In his free time, Matt loves to go deep sea fishing, scuba diving and is an avid college football fan.
When asked to summarize his experience working for STS so far, he said, “I can tell this is a true family oriented company that treats their employees very well. I have developed some good friendships here and look forward to working at STS for a very long time.”
Tracy is originally from Lynden, Washington. She has three daughters, five grandchildren and two “grand dogs.” She loves being outdoors, basking in the sunlight, attending rodeos and hunting with her husband.
Before joining STS, Tracy spent years riding and competing on horseback and is now a retired cowgirl who still holds a deep love for the equestrian arts.
Hilary Yost is excited to be part of the STS AeroStaff team. She grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and now resides in Enterprise, Alabama. When Hilary is not at work, she enjoys experiencing everything the South has to offer from tasting boiled peanuts to kayaking at a local spring. You can always find Hilary, her husband and their 2 dogs traveling somewhere new.
Javany is originally from Philadelphia but has lived in Florida for the past nine years. She is an artistically creative person who loves both writing and photography. She also enjoys participating in her church ministry and attending her life group.
So far, Javany really enjoys working at STS Component Solutions and said, “Between the kind and helpful employees, as well as the fun and welcoming environment, I couldn’t ask for more in a position.”
Bryan was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, and has been a Florida resident for nearly six years. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature, a Masters of Arts in Journalism and a vast amount of experience working as a Content Marketing Specialist.
When Bryan isn’t busy inside the office, he enjoys golfing, fishing, playing video games, writing, reading a good book and spending time with his beautiful wife Jamie and their seven-month-old daughter, Siena.
Bryan joined STS Aviation Group at the end of March, and when he was asked to talk about his experience working for the company, he said, “Being a part of the STS family is both a privilege and a pleasure. I’m excited about the direction the company is taking, and I look forward to fueling its growth for years to come.”
Jerry was born in Marine City, Michigan, but moved to Florida 35 years ago. He currently lives in Stuart with his wife Brook and their two boys Dylan and Austin.
Jerry spends his free time attending his children’s sporting events, hanging out with family and watching football.
Since joining STS, Jerry said he “feels welcomed and like part of the team. It’s a great working environment with a positive atmosphere and extremely helpful co-workers. A big thanks to Dan McNamara for all his assistance. I’m looking forward to being here for a long time and helping STS continue its success.”
Michael grew up in Norwalk, Connecticut, and moved to Port Saint Lucie with his family after graduating high school. He has a Bachelors degree in Cyber Security and is focused on obtaining his Masters in Computer Science/Software Engineering.
When Michael is not at work, he enjoys playing video games and building custom gaming systems.
His duties at STS Component Solutions include, but are not limited to, the management, analysis and reporting of submitted/requested customer data and custom requests from users, as well as developing intranet web tools.
Of his experience working for STS so far, Michael said, “the company shows its employees appreciation more than any of my previous jobs.”
James grew up in St. George, Utah, before his family moved to Port St. Lucie in 2004. After finishing high school, James went straight to college where he earned multiple degrees in Accounting, Computer Science and Digital Media.
After starting at STS Component Solutions a few months back, one key impression he got was how well everyone worked together to meet goals.
Currently, James is spearheading a project aimed at building a KPI system that will be displayed on TVs throughout the STS office in Palm City, Florida.
In his spare time, James enjoys fiddling with computers, taking college classes and playing chess.
Alicia was born and raised in Port Saint Lucie and loves to travel. She is one of the newest additions to the STS AeroStaff ADS department and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theater from Catawba College. When Alicia is not at work, it’s likely that you’ll find her at rehearsal or performing on stage.
When asked about her experience working for STS thus far, Alicia said, “STS is really a gleaming jewel of a company. It balances excellent business standards with a personal family-like environment, which I believe is the reason we’re so efficient and the best at what we do! I couldn’t be happier working here with such wonderful and passionate people.”
David Jones is originally from Jamaica. He moved to the states in 1985 and lived in Ft. Lauderdale for close to 20 years. David now resides in Port Saint Lucie, and he enjoys traveling and fishing when the weather permits.
David started working for STS in the early part of 2014 and when asked to describe his experience with the company thus far, he stated, “If I had to describe my work experience in one word, that word we be ‘phenomenal.’ STS is by far one of the best companies I have ever worked for.”
Michael originally hails from the Queen City of Buffalo, New York. He moved to Florida three and a half years ago and has been working in the aviation field for nearly six years.
In his spare time, Micheal enjoys playing sports and hanging out by the pool. He is also a passionate Buffalo sports fan, a fact that makes him a die-hard loyalist when it comes to the Buffalo Bills and Sabres.
When asked to summarize his experience working for STS, Michael said, “I’m excited about the great opportunity I have here at STS Component Solutions supporting one of our largest accounts, Delta Air Lines. I am also proud to be a part of such a great organization.”
In addition to being one of the newest employees at STS AeroStaff Services, Whitney is proudly pursuing an advanced degree in Business Administration. She is originally from a small town in Tennessee called Dickson, which is located about 45 minutes outside of Nashville.
When Whitney is not busy at work or studying for exams, she loves to bake and spend time with both family and friends.
When asked about her experience working for STS, Whintey said “I’ve really enjoyed my time here and look forward to growing with the company.”
Amorina (AKA: Mori) has a degree in Business Administration and is originally from Buenos Aires. She moved to Florida in 2001 to take a job working in the Human Resources and Payroll Department for Marriott Hotels.
After moving to Jensen Beach (STS’ home base of operations), Mori discovered an amazing opportunity to join the STS family and says she “couldn’t be happier.”
When Mori is not at work, she likes spending her free time with family and friends while also traveling as much as possible.
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from River State College, Chris spends a good portion of his time outside of the office attending classes and studying for exams. He is in a long-term relationship, has a soon-to-be six-year-old daughter named Abigal and loves working with computers.
In his role at STS, Chris is responsible for basic troubleshooting, equipment purchasing and setup, access management and working with end-users to ensure proper system functionality.
When asked about his experience working for STS these past few months, Chris said “I really enjoy working for STS. I feel like its employees are treated very well, and everyone on the team is accepting and supportive. In the future, I hope to continue with school, apply the knowledge gained from my every day duties and become a more valuable member of the IT Department and STS team.”
Christian hails from Fort Pierce, Florida, but spent much of his childhood living in various cities throughout the country.
He joins STS Aviation Group as its Building Superintendent, and we consider him a jack of all trades.
When not at work, Christian likes to spend his free time at the beach enjoying the fine Florida sun.
Asked about his impressions working for STS so far, Christian said, “I really enjoy working for a company that treats its employees like family. I hope to here for a long time.”
